Data center with static control flooring Does controlling humidity in data centers provide an effective means of preventing static problems?

The American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning's technical committee have issued recommendations for humidity levels within computer rooms. This article points out the difficulty of keeping humidity levels within that recommended range. A systems engineer recounts his experience with ESD shock due to low level humidity and lack of proper static controls that lead to a system shut down. One data center consultant suggests that humidity levels below 20% can cause systems to fail due to triboelectric effect without any contact at all from an operator.

While controlling humidity is essential in any area utilizing sensitive networked computer systems, it should not be relied upon to control ESD. Humidity level does have an effect on static generation, but your static control measures should not be reliant on maintaining a certain level of ambient humidity, since there's a very high margin of error. Some telecommunications facilities use wrist straps to combat static charge generation, which is effective but can hamper an operator's mobility.
